v  Background of the Department of Islamic Teaching at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS)

The Department of Islamic Teachings at MUMS was officially founded after separation from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, under the management of Hojjat al-Eslam Kheir Abadi. Since 1997, the department has become an academic division by recruiting faculty members and with the management of Hojjat al-Eslam Dr. Mahdi Ebrahimi.

Initially, the Department of Islamic Teachings was a general subdivision of the Educational Deputy, which continued until 2007. Since 2007, the department was promoted as an academic division along with the other departments at the School of Medicine with the approval of the affiliated ministry. In 2008, the department was transferred to the School of Medicine at MUMS.

The Department of Islamic Teachings presents the general courses of Islamic theology. During their education, students must complete 12 credits of these subjects. Since 2005, these subjects were classified into five main categories, and the students were supposed to select 12 credits from these categories.  

 

 

First Category:

Theoretical Principles of Islam

This category includes the following subjects:

Islamic Thought 1, Islamic Thought 2, Man in Islam, Social and Political Rights

v  Students must select two courses (4 credits) from this category and one subject from the other categories (2 credits).

Second Category:

Islamic Ethics

This category includes the following subjects:

Islamic Ethics, Philosophy of Ethics, Practical Mysticism in Islam, Lifestyle

Third Category:

Introduction to Islamic Resources

 This category includes the following subjects:

Thematic Commentary of the Quran, Thematic Interpretation of Nahjolbalaghe

Fourth Category:

Islamic Revolution

This category includes the following subjects:

Islamic Revolution of Iran, Introduction to the Constitutional Law, Islamic Thoughts of Imam Khomeini

Fifth Category:

Islamic Culture and Civilization

This category includes the following subjects:

History and Culture of the Islamic Civilization, Analytical History of Islam, History of Imamate

 

v  Currently, presenting the subject of “Iranian and Islamic Culture and Civilization” has become mandatory for the students, which is offered by the Department of Islamic Teachings.

 

 

 

Objectives & Perspective

The Department of Islamic Teachings fulfills the following tasks:

1.     Recognition of the theoretical principles of Islam in various aspects by the students

2.     Improvement and strengthening of the religious beliefs in students

3.     Recognition of the historical and theoretical principles of the Islamic revolution and historical civilization of Iran and Islam

4.     Research regarding Islamic issues and interdisciplinary matters between Islam and medicine

To meet the mentioned objectives, the Department of Islamic Teachings operates in the following manners:

Ø  Presenting courses on Islamic teachings in accordance with the syllabi of schools

Ø  Responding to the religious enquiries of university members

Ø  Counseling of students regarding their needs and issues

Ø  Participation in conferences, workshops and trainings relating to the specialty of professors

Ø  Conducting research relating to the specialty of professors

Ø  Cooperation with universities in cultural seminars

Ø  Performing the assigned tasks of the university in terms of research and education

Ø  Interaction with Islamic and cultural centers outside the university
